What is occupational therapy?
Occupational Therapy (OT) supports the skills children need to participate successfully and confidently in everyday life. For children, their primary “occupations” are often play, self-care, learning, and participating in family, school, and community routines. Through meaningful, functional play, pediatric OT can support emotional regulation, sensory processing, fine and gross motor skills, feeding, attention, social participation, self-care, and the skills needed to navigate classroom and community environments.
OT also helps children work through challenges by building stronger connections between their bodies, environments, and caregivers. This may include learning to co-regulate, developing self-advocacy skills, using environmental modifications or adaptations, strengthening sensory processing, and helping the nervous system feel safer and more regulated during everyday experiences.
Ultimately, the goal of pediatric OT is to foster motor mastery, nervous system regulation, confidence, and autonomy so children can more fully participate in the things they both want to do—like play—and need to do—like caring for themselves, learning, and safely engaging with the world around them.
-
We consider the whole child — including their physical, emotional, sensory, social, environmental, and family needs — to support meaningful participation and overall well-being.
-
We tailor our evaluation, goals, and intervention strategies to each unique child, considering their specific strengths, needs, interests, routines, environment, and family priorities.
-
We focus on what a child CAN do, using their abilities, interests, and successes as the foundation for building confidence, developing skills, and supporting meaningful participation.
-
We recognize each child’s neurological differences as valid, building on their strengths and interests, and support participation, regulation and autonomy.
